MWC Barcelona 2026 opened Monday, March 2. In the first 30 hours, the industry delivered satellite deals, autonomous network agreements, 6G coalition pledges, and a wave of AI deployments. Just the 20 announcements that will actually shape how networks are built and operated in the next three years.
Here is everything that happened.
Connectivity & Satellite
1. Deutsche Telekom announced a landmark Starlink satellite-to-mobile deal covering 10 European countries.
Deutsche Telekom and SpaceX's Starlink confirmed a direct-to-device satellite partnership that will bring satellite connectivity to European smartphones by early 2028. The service uses Starlink's V2 next-generation satellites operating in MSS spectrum - covering data, voice, and messaging in areas where terrestrial towers cannot reach. Germany alone already covers 90% of its geographic area with 5G; the satellite layer closes the remaining gap.
2. Virgin Media O2 announced a direct-to-cell satellite service partnership for UK customers.
VodafoneThree confirmed plans to hook UK customers up to satellite connectivity as early as this summer, making it one of the first live direct-to-cell deployments in Europe.
3. Vodafone announced a satellite strategy with ten European operators aligned behind a shared roadmap.
Vodafone's CEO set out a satellite game plan at MWC that goes beyond individual deals - ten European operators are now coordinating their NTN (non-terrestrial network) roadmaps to avoid fragmentation.
Satellite-to-mobile is no longer a 2030 discussion. Three European moves in 30 hours confirm commercial timelines are real.
Autonomous Networks & AI
4. Ericsson and Nokia announced formal cooperation to accelerate autonomous network operations.
In a move that would have been unthinkable two years ago, Ericsson and Nokia announced cross-ecosystem membership - Ericsson joins Nokia's SMO Marketplace, Nokia joins Ericsson's rApp Ecosystem. Both companies will make rApps available across each other's platforms, standardising on the R1 interface. The explicit target: Level 4 autonomy.
This is the most commercially significant announcement of MWC so far. Operators running mixed Ericsson-Nokia environments which is most of them gain multi-vendor automation without custom integration work. 5. Nokia announced Network as Code agentic AI integration with Google Cloud.
Nokia expanded its Network as Code platform with API-based agentic AI capabilities co-developed with Google Cloud. The integration allows AI agents to act on network state without human input adjusting configurations, responding to demand spikes, and resolving faults autonomously.
6. Deutsche Telekom announced a world premiere AI-powered call assistant at MWC.
Deutsche Telekom debuted an AI-powered call assistant that operates at the network layer not on-device, marking one of the first carrier-grade AI assistant deployments shown at MWC.
7. SK Telecom announced expanded global AI partnerships at MWC Barcelona.
SK Telecom confirmed a new set of global AI partnerships at MWC, continuing its strategy of building an AI-native operator model that it is now exporting to global partners.
6G
8. Ericsson and Qualcomm announced validated 6G prototypes with live cmWave spectrum demos.
Ericsson and Qualcomm confirmed joint 6G prototype work with live demonstrations using centimetre-wave spectrum at MWC a key milestone in proving 6G radio viability ahead of standardisation.
9. Qualcomm announced an industry coalition with a milestone-driven 6G commercialisation roadmap.
Qualcomm and other industry leaders committed to a 6G trajectory at MWC, releasing a joint roadmap with defined milestones for commercialisation. This is standards coordination ahead of the 3GPP Release 21 timeline.
10. GSMA and ESA announced up to €100M in new funding for AI, NTN, D2D, and 6G.
The GSMA and European Space Agency committed up to €100M in combined fundingtargeting four technology pillars: AI in networks, non-terrestrial networks, device-to-device connectivity, and 6G research.
6G is no longer a research project - it is a procurement cycle.
Open RAN & Network Infrastructure
11. Ericsson announced opening of MWC 2026 with network evolution and AI at the centre.
CEO Börje Ekholm opened Ericsson's MWC 2026 presence with a focus on network evolution centred on AI integration and the transition toward autonomous operations framing Ericsson's commercial agenda for 2026.
12. Samsung and AMD announced reinforced collaboration to advance AI-powered network innovations.
Samsung and AMD deepened their strategic collaboration on AI-powered RAN, targeting compute architecture improvements that reduce power consumption in base stations.
13. Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, TIM, and Vodafone announced the first live pan-European federated edge demo.
Five of Europe's largest operators achieved the first federated edge continuum demonstration a shared infrastructure layer that allows workloads to move across operator boundaries without re-architecting applications. This is the groundwork for a unified European edge market.
Huawei & ZTE
14. Huawei announced 115 live industrial AI deployments with global customers at MWC.
Huawei released 115 industrial intelligence showcases with global operator and enterprise customers at its MWC industrial summit one of the largest collections of live production deployments shown at any single trade event.
15. Huawei announced 22 new industrial AI solutions launched with partners at MWC Barcelona.
Alongside the live deployment showcase, Huawei launched 22 new industrial AI solutions co-developed with partners, expanding its AI portfolio across manufacturing, utilities, and transport verticals.
16. Huawei Cloud Core Network announced ICNMaster, a single-domain autonomous core network solution.
Huawei's cloud core division announced ICNMaster a single-domain platform targeting full autonomous core network operations, reducing manual intervention across configuration, fault management, and optimisation.
17. ZTE announced full-stack AI innovations across connectivity, cloud, home, and personal devices.
ZTE unveiled its full-stack AI architecture at MWC, spanning network infrastructure, cloud platforms, home networking, and consumer devices - a broad bet on vertically integrated AI from the RAN to the end device.
Devices
18. Xiaomi announced the 17 Ultra flagship smartphone at MWC Barcelona.
Xiaomi launched the 17 Ultra at MWC, its highest-specification flagship to date, targeting premium Android competition directly.
19. Honor announced the Robot Phone with a motorised camera arm at MWC.
Honor debuted the Robot Phone a smartphone with a mechanical motorised camera arm and a companion humanoid robot the most hardware-ambitious consumer device shown at MWC this year.
20. Lenovo announced a foldable gaming handheld and a modular AI PC concept at MWC.
Lenovo showed two form-factor experiments at MWC a foldable gaming handheld and a modular AI PC pushing beyond conventional laptop and tablet categories.
What the First 30 Hours Tell Us
Three patterns are visible before MWC Day 1 ends.
First, satellite-to-mobile went from roadmap to contract. Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 all confirmed commercial satellite deals within 24 hours of MWC opening. The European NTN market is consolidating faster than most operators planned.
Second, vendor cooperation is replacing vendor competition at the infrastructure layer. The Ericsson-Nokia autonomous network pact is commercially motivated both companies benefit from operators choosing open architectures over closed alternatives.
Third, AI deployment volume is the new benchmark. Huawei's 115 live deployments is a direct signal to Western vendors: production scale, not architecture elegance, is what enterprise and operator buyers are evaluating.
